FDR Drive Waterfront Views: A Lower Manhattan Walking Stretch
FDR Drive isn’t a place most people think to “visit,” but the pedestrian paths that run alongside it in Lower Manhattan offer some of the most open harbor views in the city.
This stretch connects the Seaport, South Street, and Battery Park with long sightlines, light wind off the water, and a surprisingly relaxed walking pace compared to the inland streets.
Starting Near Pier 11
If you arrive by ferry at Pier 11, head south along the East River waterfront. The path runs parallel to FDR Drive, but the sound of traffic fades behind the water and the skyline.
Early morning is especially calm here, with joggers and a few photographers setting up along the railing.
South Street to the Harbor Edge
Continue south past the Seaport area. You’ll notice how the buildings gradually thin out and the harbor begins to dominate the view.
This is one of the best angles in Lower Manhattan for wide, open water shots without heavy foot traffic.
Approaching Battery Park
As you move closer to Battery Park, the path opens further. Ferries cross in the distance, and on clear days the Statue of Liberty sits directly in view.
This stretch feels less commercial than the Seaport blocks and more like a quiet waterfront corridor.
